Fought to a standstill by Robert E. Lee during the Overland Campaign Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant decided to shift his focus to Lee's logistics and strike the city of Petersburg. Grant sent his cavalry under Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan into central Virginia as a diversion. Confederate cavalry under Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton soon took up the chase. Hampton found Sheridan near Trevilian Station in Louisa County. For the next two days both sides fought each other to a standstill, ultimately forcing Sheridan to retreat.
