After the fall of Atlanta in September 1864, Confederate Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood launched an invasion of Tennessee. Hood set his sights on the capture of Nashville. Missing an opportunity to deal a major blow to Maj. Gen. John Schofield at Spring Hill, Hood confronted the Federals at Franklin on November 30. Late in the afternoon, Hood launched one of the largest assaults of the war on Schofield's position. The attack ultimately failed and Schofield withdrew to Nashville following the battle.
