In the summer of 1862, Gen. Robert E. Lee moved to confront Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of Virginia. The Confederates engaged Pope at Cedar Mountain in Culpeper and the Federals steadily withdrew beyond the Rappahannock. Lee divided his army and sent Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson on a flanking march around Pope's right. Jackson engaged Pope on the old Manassas battlefield from August 28-30 and joined by Lee soundly defeated the Union army.
