Hooglede German Military Cemetery, virtual 360° tour.
Hooglede German Military Cemetery is the final resting place of 8,257 German soldiers… among them at least one ‘Krankenschwester’ (nurse). We visited and photographed this amazing place in March 2021, when the heather was in its full colour.
Some years after the war (1932-1937) this German military cemetery was expanded with burials from other sites. The cemetery has been through some conversions throughout the years, and is since 2012 in its final beautiful lay-out.
The ‘Ehrenhalle’ in the back was built in 1937, with stones from the German pavillion at the world exhibition in Paris (1928). Inside this monumental building, you find a ceremonial tombstone, which holds the name register. Next to the Ehrenhalle are still some original headstones from the old cemetery.
This virtual tour includes amazing views in 360° on the cemetery and inside the ‘Ehrenhalle’, details of the gravestones and personal stories of Major Maximilian Stapf, Diakonesse (Krankenschwester) Marie Joppig, Matrose Otto Papenfuss, Ludwig and Jakob Nass, Leutnant Erich Ziemke, and the young Karl Rose…
